Where to Stay in Zermatt, Switzerland in Winter (with Map!)

After spending four nights in Zermatt for my 30th birthday in December, I fell in love with this adorable mountain village!

But where to stay in Zermatt can feel overwhelming, especially with so many charming chalets, alpine apartments, and boutique hotels to choose from.

Zermatt is incredibly small and walkable, but your location still matters, especially in winter when the snow is deep and the temperatures drop!

So, I’ve put together this hand-picked list of the best hotels and apartments in Zermatt to help you find the perfect place to stay, whether you’re visiting with a group, as a couple, or on a budget.

You’ll also find a map of Zermatt with important landmarks and the hotels I recommend so you can get a feel for the area and where you might want to center yourself!

Map of Zermatt with Important Landmarks

Before we dive into hotel recommendations, it’s important to understand Zermatt’s layout and major landmarks, especially if it’s your first time visiting!

Zermatt is a car-free village, but that doesn’t mean everything is right next door to each other.

While the town is compact and walkable, staying closer to the center can make a big difference when visiting Zermatt in the winter. We were about a 10-minute walk from the center, and even that felt far on some of the colder nights when the snow was heavy or we were lugging ski gear!

Ideally, you’ll stay as close to the town center as possible without breaking the bank! (I’ve notated the town center area in blue on the map below).

In addition, if you are planning to ski, snowboard, or just hit the mountain (the top things to do in Zermatt!), you’ll want to understand where the mountain access points are!

The ski area surrounding Zermatt is officially called the Matterhorn Glacier Ski Area, and there are 3 main areas of the mountain: Sunnegga-Rothorn, SchwarzseeMatterhorn Glacier Paradise, and Gornergrat.

All 3 of these areas are accessed by different locations in Zermatt, as you’ll see on the map above.

  • Sunnegga-Rothorn (green pin) is accessed by a funicular on the northeast side of town
  • SchwarzseeMatterhorn Glacier Paradise (purple pin) is accessed by a gondola system just south of town
  • Gornergrat (orange pin) is accessed by a cogwheel train on the northwest side of town next to the main train station (red pin)

Depending on your plans (skiing, sledding, cable cars, etc.), you may want to stay closer to one of these over the other.

However, there is also a free e-bus that loops through Zermatt and stops at or near all of these ski entry points, so it’s not the end of the world if you’re not right next to them!

I highly recommend downloading the Matterhorn app before your trip, which gives live updates on the buses and shows all the stops on an interactive map (along with many other cool features)!

💡 Tip: If you’re planning to ski or snowboard, check out my full Guide to Skiing in Zermatt for help choosing which slopes to hit and how the ski pass works.

3-Bedroom Apartment with Cozy, Alpine Vibe: Hotel Jägerhof Apartments

This is where we stayed during our three days in Zermatt, and we absolutely loved it! Hotel Jägerhof offers cozy alpine apartments with traditional Swiss charm, just 10 minutes on foot from the town center.

We stayed in their 3-bedroom Family Suite, which had Matterhorn views from the balcony and plenty of space for a group of six. The apartment included a living room and small dining area, which was perfect for relaxing after a long day in the snow.

Breakfast was included in our room rate and was delicious! They also had an adorable bar area with cozy couches and a fireplace that we throughout enjoyed a few nightcaps at.

We also found out when we arrived that they have a ski room where we could leave our boots, skis, etc., which even had boot drying racks!

In addition, they provided free pickup from the train station when we arrived to Zermatt, which was such a relief after arriving in the snow with all our bags!

If you’re looking for something actually affordable in Zermatt (which is no easy feat!), Hotel Alpina is one of your best bets.

This cozy, no-frills hotel is located right in the center of town, so you’re not sacrificing convenience for the price — a rarity in Zermatt!

The rooms are basic but clean, and while there aren’t a ton of extra amenities, it has glowing reviews for friendly service and unbeatable location.

If you’re just looking for a comfortable place to sleep between ski runs, spa visits, and fondue dinners, Hotel Alpina does the job perfectly, and for far less than most other properties in town.

Traditional Swiss Hotel Experience: Julen Hotel

If you’re dreaming of a classic Swiss Alps experience, look no further than Tradition Julen Hotel.

This family-owned gem is nestled right in the heart of Zermatt, just steps from the iconic Kirchbrücke bridge viewpoint and within easy walking distance to the town’s shops and restaurants.

Every time we walked past this hotel, we admired how adorable it was, especially with the Santas!

Inside, you’ll find cozy rooms with wood paneling, plush beds, and balconies (many with Matterhorn views). The hotel blends warm alpine decor with upscale comfort — a true Swiss chalet experience!

Guests also have access to a beautiful wellness center featuring an indoor pool, sauna, steam bath, and gym, perfect after a chilly day outside.

And don’t skip the hotel’s on-site restaurant, Schäferstube, where we had one of the best meals of our trip! The grilled lamb and gooey raclette were incredible, and the inside was so cozy and authentic!

Cozy Apartment for Small Groups: Apartment Galaxy Lodge

If you’re visiting Zermatt with a couple friends or as a small family, Apartment Galaxy Lodge is the perfect mix of cozy alpine charm and modern comfort.

Located right in the heart of Zermatt, this stylish apartment features dark wood paneling, leather accents, fur rugs, and all the mountain lodge vibes you could want.

It has two full beds and a pull-out couch, plus a fully equipped kitchen and a dining area — perfect if you want to save money by cooking in a few nights.

This is a great home base to explore Zermatt without sacrificing the warm, cabin-in-the-mountains aesthetic.

Spa Hotel in the Center of Town: Hotel BEAUSiTE Zermatt

If you’re looking for a luxurious winter stay that balances location, views, and amenities, Hotel BEAUSiTE is a top-tier choice.

Situated just outside the busiest part of town (but still very central), this hotel is steps from shops and restaurants while feeling like a peaceful alpine escape.

The standout feature is their incredible spa, which includes saunas, steam rooms, and a heated outdoor infinity pool with Matterhorn views!

While we didn’t stay here, we did book day passes so we could relax at the spa (without getting a massage), and it was one of my favorite days of the trip!

Now I’m convinced having a spa day is one of the best things to do in Zermatt (besides skiing, of course). So, make sure to add a bathing suit to your Zermatt packing list!

The hotel also features a cozy piano bar, ski storage, and one of the best breakfast buffets in town with a live cooking station.

At night, dine on Swiss and international cuisine in their beautiful on-site restaurant!

Large Group Apartment Close to Ski Lifts: Vrony Apartments

If you’re traveling with a group and want a cozy, upscale place close to the slopes, Vrony Apartments are a fantastic choice. There are only two apartments available, so they book up well in advance, but if you can snag one, they’re worth it!

These apartments are part of the boutique Hotel Walliserhof and sit just a short walk from the Sunnegga funicular, making it easy to hit the slopes in the morning without any hassle.

Plus, you’re still close enough to the town center for dinners, shopping, and après-ski.

I recommend the apartment that sleeps 7, which features traditional alpine decor, warm wood paneling, a fireplace, and a large balcony with stunning mountain views.

There’s also a more modern garden-view apartment with a balcony and clean, contemporary style.

Both apartments come with full kitchens, living rooms, and plenty of space to relax after a day on the mountain!

Ski-In Ski-Out Luxury Hotel: CERVO Mountain Resort

For a true luxury experience in Zermatt, CERVO Mountain Resort is hard to beat. Perched on the hillside with direct ski-in/ski-out access to the Sunnegga area, it’s one of the few properties in Zermatt where you can literally ski right up to the hotel.

CERVO is all about modern alpine luxury meets wellness. They have multiple spa areas, hot tubs with panoramic views, and a lift that takes you straight into town.

In addition, they have several on-site restaurants (rare for Zermatt) offering everything from gourmet alpine fare to Italian to Mediterranean.

We visited CERVO one night for dinner on our trip and were blown away by this hotel! But we did have to take a taxi up the hill, since it’s a bit far away.

If you’re into après-ski, CERVO also boasts an epic après-ski party, complete with live DJ sets on their cozy balcony that overlooks the Matterhorn!

While it’s a bit removed from the town center, the views and ambiance more than make up for it, especially if you’re looking to splurge!

Modern and Central Hotel with Après-Ski Vibes: Hotel ZERMAMA

If you want modern vibes, casual après-ski hangs, and a killer location, Hotel ZERMAMA is for you.

It’s located directly across from the Sunnegga lift, making it perfect for skiers! It’s also close to the train station and town center, literally the perfect location.

The hotel features stylish and modern alpine decor and a lively outdoor bar that’s ideal for après-ski drinks. We enjoyed a round of beers here under their heaters after our day on the mountain!

But what makes this spot truly unique is the Pool Position Spa Suite, which includes an outdoor hot tub with Matterhorn views and a private Finnish sauna inside the room. Perfect for couples or travelers looking to treat themselves!!

The e-bus stops right in front of this hotel, and there’s a great on-site restaurant to keep you fueled between adventures!

Tips for Booking Your Accommodation in Zermatt

Zermatt is one of the most popular winter destinations in all of Europe, and for good reason! But with its popularity comes limited availability and premium prices, especially during peak season.

Here are a few key tips to help you find the perfect place to stay:

1. Book Early (Like, Really Early)

Winter in Zermatt (especially late December through early January) is peak season, and many hotels and apartments book out 12+ months in advance (I’m not exaggerating here).

We booked our apartment 11 months before our Switzerland trip and even then, many places were already full. If you want the best pick of rooms (and prices), don’t wait!

2. Expect High Prices

Zermatt isn’t a budget destination, and accommodation here reflects that. It’s rare to find anything under $300/night in winter — even basic rooms.

That said, the experience is worth it! Just know going in that you’re paying for the alpine charm, Matterhorn views, and world-class skiing.

And if you are going with a group, it will almost always be cheaper to book an apartment that can fit you all instead of individual rooms. That’s what we did, and we only paid around $100 per person per night!

🏨 Where to stay is just one piece of the puzzle! If you’re still working through flights, budgeting, travel insurance, or your phone plan, my Passport to Confidence guide covers all of it. A $7 planning roadmap built for first-time international travelers. Download it instantly!

3. Stay Close to Town (Especially in Winter)

While Zermatt is very small and walkable, staying closer to the town center makes a big difference in winter.

We stayed about a 10-minute walk from the center, and while that doesn’t sound far, trudging through snow in sub-zero temps after dinner isn’t always fun. It was totally fine for us and I would definitely stay there again, but if convenience is key for you, prioritize proximity!

4. Transportation Is Easy

Zermatt is car-free, but you’ll still have options to get around!

Most hotels offer free e-taxi pick-up from the train station when you arrive (which we loved — especially arriving in the snow at night). If not, you can always grab and pay for a taxi yourself.

In addition, the local e-bus also stops at major points in town and is free to use!

5. Understand European Bed Sizes

Americans, take note: bed sizing is different in Europe. What we know as a “double” or “full” bed (aka smaller than a queen) might actually be two twin beds pushed together (which equates to a king size bed in America).

So don’t get spooked if you see double beds in the description for your hotel rooms. I always check photos of the room on Booking.com or Tripadvisor to be sure, or you can also ask the hotel to clarify!

Final Thoughts

Zermatt in winter is truly a fairytale destination, and choosing the right hotel can elevate your experience from great to unforgettable! Whether you’re dreaming of Matterhorn views, alpine spas, or a cozy apartment for your group, there’s something for every type of traveler here.

Just remember: Zermatt gets very popular in the winter, especially around the holidays, so if you find a hotel or apartment that fits your vibe, don’t wait — book it early!
