Where to Stay in Santorini for First-Time Visitors: Detailed Guide
Choosing where to stay in Santorini is one of the most important decisions of your whole trip.
The island is bigger than it looks on a map, and each area has a different vibe and price point.
We stayed in Oia for our 3 days on the island and loved it, but it’s definitely not the right choice for everyone. After traveling around the island, I can easily see the pros and cons of different areas.
Whether you’re after the iconic caldera views, a lively base with easy transport, quiet romance, or a beach holiday at a lower price point, one of these areas and hotels in Santorini will fit!
Here’s an honest breakdown of all four areas, with hotel picks and personal recommendations for each!
Understanding Santorini’s Layout and Main Areas
Santorini (officially named Thira) may be small, only about 18 kilometers (11 miles) long, but it’s jam-packed with jaw-dropping views, dreamy villages, and postcard-worthy sunsets.
Don’t be fooled by its size! Getting from one end to the other can take over 30 minutes by car, thanks to busy and winding roads.
Or, even longer by bus if you don’t have your own vehicle! (Jump down to the Getting Around section to determine the best transportation method for you, depending on where you stay).
As you can see on the map below, the island of Santorini is shaped like a crescent, thanks to a massive volcanic eruption thousands of years ago.
Most of the action happens along the northwestern cliffside, where the famous villages of Oia, Fira, and Imerovigli cling dramatically to the caldera’s edge.
On the quieter eastern side, you’ll find black-sand beaches and chill coastal towns like Kamari and Perissa.
Here’s a quick breakdown of these 4 main areas 👇🏼
- Oia (shown in purple): Oia is the most famous part of Santorini thanks to its incredible location at the tip of the island. For this reason, it’s also the most crowded and expensive. Expect to stand in line for photos at the most epic viewpoints and be shoulder to shoulder with people around sunset.
- Fira (shown in yellow): Fira is the capital and hub of the island, packed with narrow streets, cliffside bars, and souvenir shops. It’s also where you’ll find the island’s best nightlife, the main bus station, and not far away, the cruise port! There’s also epic caldera views and blue-domed churches here too 😉
- Imerovigli (shown in green): Often called the “balcony to the Aegean,” this serene village, just a 30-minute walk from Fira, offers panoramic views without the crowds. It’s very popular with honeymooners, couples, and those looking for quiet.
- Kamari & Perissa Beach (shown in red): On the island’s flat eastern side, these beach towns offer long stretches of volcanic black sand, a more budget-friendly vibe, and easygoing beach bars. If waking up to the sound of waves is your jam, this is your spot.
| Area | Best For | Vibe | Price | Concerns | Top Hotel Rec |
| 🌅 Oia | First-timers, couples, view-seekers | Romantic, iconic, luxurious | $$$ | Crowds at sunset, steep stairs, priciest area | Kaleidoscope Cave House |
| 🌃 Fira | Nightlife lovers, budget-conscious, no-car travelers | Buzzy, central, convenient | $$ | Noisy, less romantic, touristy | Limestone |
| 🤍 Imerovigli | Honeymooners, couples, quiet luxury | Peaceful, elevated, intimate | $$$ | Limited restaurants, fewer transport options | Astra Suites |
| 🏖️ Kamari & Perissa | Beach lovers, families, budget travelers | Relaxed, casual, beachy | $ | No caldera views, far from Oia | Kastelli Resort |
Staying in Oia: Picture Perfect But Crowded
Perched on the northern tip of Santorini, Oia boasts panoramic views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea – a view you see on countless postcards and screensavers!
It really is even more beautiful than it looks in photos, which is hard to believe! We personally chose to stay in Oia during our 3 days in Santorini because we wanted to be where the views were.
Oia is an extremely walkable village, though the streets can feel like a maze at times. That said, prepare for stairs. Lots of them.
If you’re hauling luggage or have mobility issues, it might be challenging to navigate the steep paths and staircases of Oia.
Our hotel was down a very steep set of stairs, but luckily, the owner helped us carry our luggage! (Use my Greek Islands Packing List to keep your suitcase light!).

Oia is most popular at sunset, drawing visitors from all over the island to see the sun sink into the sea. To be quite honest, it’s pretty miserable during this time of day.
The streets and viewpoints become packed, especially at popular spots like the Castle ruins. Then, once the sun sets, allll those people flock to the restaurants looking for somewhere to eat dinner.
If you are staying in Oia, I recommend one of the following during sunset to avoid the crowds:
- Eat dinner at a restaurant with a sunset view (reservations recommended)
- Head to the opposite side of Oia (where you can’t see the sun actually setting) for golden hour pictures
- Choose a hotel with a nice view so you can enjoy the sunset without the crowds (maybe from a jacuzzi, private balcony, or pool deck!).
Besides adorable streets and great sunset views, Oia offers easy access to Ammoudi Bay, a small port just below the village where you’ll find fresh seafood tavernas and the opportunity for a refreshing dip in the sea.
It’s a steep walk down (and back up), but it’s well worth it! You can also take an (expensive) taxi up and down, or ride donkeys (do not recommend).

Beyond the views, Oia’s narrow streets are filled with boutique shops, local art galleries, and charming cafes that are perfect for a relaxed afternoon of wandering and window-shopping. Check out my full guide on all the incredible things to do in Oia here!
However, there is not much nightlife on this part of the island. If you want to party the night away at a club or stay up late at a cocktail bar, Oia is not the place for you!
Note: Those gorgeous cave houses with sea views fill up FAST in Santorini. I recommend booking 6+ months in advance if you are traveling during the summer season.
Oia Hotel Recommendations
🏨 Kaleidoscope Cave Houses — Our Pick
- 📍 Location: Central Oia, tucked away from the main street crowds
- 💰 Price range: $$$
- ✨ Best for: First-timers, couples, anyone wanting the iconic Oia experience
- 🌟 Highlight: Private balcony hot tub with direct caldera views
We personally stayed at Kaleidoscope Cave Houses during our time in Oia, which was perfect for us. We wanted that luxury feel without the insane price tag, and that’s exactly what we got!
The location was right off the main walkway in Oia, but still felt very private.
The owner was incredibly sweet: he carried our luggage, made dinner reservations for us, and even gave us a custom map of Oia with his favorite spots!
Our room had a hot tub on the balcony and also included breakfast with our rate, which was served every morning on the small terrace overlooking the sea – heavenly.
The only thing that would’ve made our stay here better would’ve been a pool to cool off in during the day instead of the hot tub, but beggars can’t be choosers!
Maregio Suites – Luxury Rooms with Plunge Pools
- 📍 Location: Tip of Oia, away from the main street crowds
- 💰 Price range: $$$$
- ✨ Best for: Couples, honeymoon, those looking to splurge
- 🌟 Highlight: Private plunge pools and dreamy infinity pool
If you’re looking to splurge while in Oia, Maregio Suites is at the top of my bucket list!
This hotel is located right at the tip of Oia, which means gorgeous, unobstructed views of the sunset (without the crowds!!).
The rooms are exactly what you picture when you think of Santorini: white walls and blue accents that make it feel like you’re inside a sunny cave.
But the best part of Maregio Suites is the pools and jacuzzis. Some of the more luxurious rooms have their own plunge pools or jacuzzis on your private balcony, so you can relax with endless sea views.
However, there’s also a gorgeous public pool at the resort with big comfy loungers right in front of the on-site Aspa restaurant.
Rooms range from $500-$1000 per night, depending on when you visit and which style you choose. But it looks absolutely worth it!!
Staying in Fira: The Heart of Santorini
Located near the center of the island, Fira is Santorini’s bustling capital. As the main hub, it’s home to a wide range of restaurants, bars, shops, and museums.
Fira’s cliffside location also offers spectacular views of the caldera, making it an ideal spot for those who want both convenience and scenery.
One of Fira’s biggest advantages is its central location. From here, it’s relatively easy to get anywhere else on the island, whether you’re heading to Oia for sunset or down to Kamari Beach.
Every bus route starts and ends in Fira, so if you’re relying on public transport, you won’t have to deal with multiple transfers like in other villages.
Fira is also full of energy. During the day, you can explore art galleries, visit the Archaeological Museum of Thera, or grab a coffee with caldera views.
At night, the village comes alive with bars and clubs that cater to a wide range of tastes. Whether you want a chill evening with wine or a lively dance floor, you’ll find it here.
Additionally, Fira offers a mix of accommodations, from budget-friendly hotels to upscale options with infinity pools!
However, Fira can also be chaotic, especially during peak tourist season. The streets can become crowded, and if you’re looking for a peaceful, quiet retreat, this isn’t the place for it.
Additionally, while Fira has stunning views, they aren’t quite as iconic or serene as those in Oia or Imerovigli (but still incredibly gorgeous).

Hotel Recommendations in Fira
San Giorgio – Budget in Paradise
- 📍 Location: Heart of Fira
- 💰 Price range: $$
- ✨ Best for: Budget travelers who want to be in the thick of the action
- 🌟 Highlight: Great location, beautiful rooms, reasonable prices
If you’re interested in staying in Fira to save some money, that doesn’t mean you have to skimp on value.
In fact, if you don’t care about having a private balcony or plunge pool, you can find places under $200 per night!
One of the best options in Fira is San Giorgio. This quaint hotel has several different room styles, ranging from $150-$250 (depending on time of year).
The rooms are spacious, clean, and beautifully decorated. And there is even a pool on the property!
It’s also perfectly located in the heart of Fira, just steps from a variety of restaurants, shops, bars, and the Fira bus stop.
This hotel is the perfect option for those who don’t need a fancy hotel room but still want great service and location.

Limestone – Hot Tubs + Sea Views in Fira
- 📍 Location: Quiet end of Fira
- 💰 Price range: $$$
- ✨ Best for: Couples & honeymooners with access to the action
- 🌟 Highlight: Walking distance to downtown Fira + sea-view rooms with hot tubs
For those who want those Oia-like vibes without dealing with the crowds, Limestone in Fira is the spot for you.
This luxurious hotel is perfectly tucked away on the quieter, southern end of Fira but is still walking distance to all the main restaurants, shops, and bars.
Each room type comes with dreamy views of the sea and a hot tub, either tucked into your room or on the balcony/rooftop.
The best part? You select what you want for breakfast each night, and it is delivered to your room in the morning to enjoy in private!
All of the rooms here look incredible, and they are fairly affordable, especially in lower season (like May or October).
Note: They don’t have a ton of rooms here, so make sure to book early!!
Staying in Imerovigli: Quiet Luxury
Nestled between Fira and Oia, Imerovigli is a peaceful village known for its panoramic caldera views and luxurious accommodations.
Often referred to as “the balcony to the Aegean,” this village is the highest point along the caldera and offers some of the most uninterrupted views on the island.
Unlike Oia and Fira, Imerovigli has a calm and serene atmosphere, making it ideal for travelers seeking relaxation.
The walking paths through Imerovigli are scenic and peaceful, perfect for taking in the dramatic cliffs and sparkling sea without bumping into large tourist crowds. It’s also a great spot to watch the sunset without the chaos you’d experience in Oia.
The location is central enough to offer easy access to both Fira (about a 30-minute walk) and Oia (a short drive), making it convenient for day trips to explore other parts of the island.
Imerovigli is also home to Skaros Rock, a historic viewpoint and former fortress along the Fira to Oia hike!!
While the peaceful atmosphere is a major draw, it may not be ideal for travelers who want nightlife or lots of dining and shopping options nearby. Imerovigli has a handful of restaurants and cafes, but for more variety, you’ll need to head to Fira.
Additionally, since many of the accommodations here cater to couples and honeymooners, solo travelers or those seeking a more social environment may feel a bit isolated.

Hotel Recommendations in Imerovigli
Astra Suites — Luxury at Its Absolute Peak
- 📍 Location: Cliffside Imerovigli, perched above the caldera
- 💰 Price range: $$$$
- ✨ Best for: Honeymooners, couples, anyone ready to splurge
- 🌟 Highlight: Private infinity pools, full-service spa, rooftop restaurant with sunset views
Most accommodations in Imerovigli are boutique-style, with a strong focus on privacy, breathtaking scenery, and top-tier service.
If this is your vibe, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from. However, the hotel that stood out most to me was Astra Suites.
This place is the definition of luxury, and there’s a room for every level of splurge. You can opt for a simple junior suite with caldera views, all the way up to private infinity pools on the terrace.
The property also has a full-service spa with a jacuzzi and steam room, as well as a private airport shuttle!
And to end each day, you can head up to the rooftop restaurant and watch the sun sink into the caldera from one of the best vantage points on the entire island.
I haven’t personally stayed here (yet — it’s very much on my bucket list!), but Astra Suites is consistently one of the most-recommended luxury properties in Imerovigli, and it’s easy to see why.
Staying in Kamari or Perissa: Black Sand Beach Paradise
On the eastern side of Santorini, away from the dramatic caldera cliffs, you’ll find Kamari and Perissa, two laid-back beach towns known for their long stretches of volcanic black sand.
These areas offer a completely different vibe compared to the cliffside villages, with relaxed beachfront bars, water sports, and way more space to spread out!
If you’re a beach lover, Kamari and Perissa are the best spots to soak up the sun and enjoy the Aegean Sea. Both towns have a range of beachfront restaurants and cafes, making it easy to spend the whole day relaxing by the water.
The flat terrain also makes getting around easy—no steep steps or cliffs to navigate here! Plus, accommodations are way more affordable, making it a great option for budget-conscious travelers.
We personally spent a whole half day here during our second day in Santorini, and it was such a nice break from the stairs and crowds of Oia! There are free lounge chairs if you order food or drinks, so we destroyed a Greek salad and fries while laying in the sun.
Kamari also has an open-air cinema, perfect for an evening of entertainment under the stars.

While Kamari and Perissa are perfect for beach days, they’re farther from the caldera-side villages. It can take around 20 minutes to drive to Fira, and even longer to reach Oia. If your goal is to experience Santorini’s famous sunsets and cliffside views, you’ll have to make the trip back and forth.
Additionally, the beach towns don’t offer the iconic scenery that many travelers associate with Santorini, which may be disappointing if that’s your main priority.
Another downside is that nightlife and dining options here are more low-key. While you’ll find plenty of relaxed beach bars, the vibe is much more chill compared to the buzzing energy of Fira.
Hotel Recommendations in Kamari and Perissa
In terms of where to stay and choosing between Kamari and Perissa, Kamari is the more developed and lively of the two, with a long pedestrian promenade lined with cafes, bars, and shops.
It’s also closer to the airport and easier to reach from Fira. Perissa, while slightly quieter, offers a similar beachside experience with great food and a more relaxed feel.
🏨 Kastelli Resort — Best Mid-Range Pick
- 📍 Location: Kamari, short walk to the beach
- 💰 Price range: $
- ✨ Best for: Couples, families, beach lovers who want comfort without the caldera price tag
- 🌟 Highlight: Four pools, spa, gym, and a beautiful garden setting
If you want to get the most bang for your buck, you truly cannot beat Kastelli Resort in Kamari. This gorgeous, 5-star resort is a fraction of the cost of hotels in Fira, Oia, or Imerovigli.
No seriously, their luxurious, swim-up pool suite is around $300 in peak season!
The resort is massive, with four pools (one main one and three smaller ones), plus an on-site spa, gym, and restaurant. The vibe is completely different than the tiny hotels along the caldera.
They also offer a shuttle to the airport, which is located just 10 minutes away by car.
If you want to base yourself on the beach side of the island and still feel luxurious without spending caldera money, Kastelli Resort is a great pick!
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better to stay in: Oia or Fira?
Oia is perfect if you’re seeking iconic sunsets, a romantic vibe, and a more exclusive atmosphere. However, it can be expensive and crowded during sunset hours. Fira is more central, lively, and convenient for transportation and activities, making it ideal if you plan to explore the island extensively or want access to nightlife.
Where to stay in Santorini without a car?
Fira is the most practical area for travelers without a car, as it’s the island’s transportation hub. All buses connect here, giving you direct access to other villages and beaches. Oia and Kamari are also manageable without a car, though you may have to transfer in Fira to reach certain places or rely on private transportation.
Where to stay in Santorini for couples?
Imerovigli is a top choice for couples, offering privacy, luxury, and stunning views without the tourist crowds. Many hotels cater specifically to honeymooners. Oia is another romantic option with its famous sunsets and picturesque charm, though it tends to be busier.
Where to stay in Santorini with kids?
Kamari and Perissa are great for families, thanks to their flat terrain, easy beach access, and relaxed atmosphere. Many hotels offer pools and family-friendly amenities. Fira can also be suitable if you prefer to be near transportation and activities, but it’s busier and may involve more walking and stairs.
What is the best area to stay in Santorini for first-time visitors?
Fira is often recommended for first-time visitors due to its central location and convenience. You’ll have access to transportation, restaurants, and shops, with great caldera views. For a quieter but still scenic experience, Imerovigli or Oia are also excellent choices. We chose Oia for the incredible views!
Where is the best place to stay for sunsets?
Oia is world-famous for its sunset views, though it gets very crowded. Imerovigli offers equally breathtaking views without the crowds, often with private hotel terraces for a more intimate experience.
Are there good budget options in Santorini?
Kamari and Perissa are the best areas for budget-friendly stays. These beach towns have affordable hotels, dining options, and activities without sacrificing comfort. Fira also offers some budget accommodations, but prices may still be higher due to its central location. There are also plenty of other lesser-known neighborhoods on the island to choose from!
How many days should I stay in Santorini?
Three to four days is typically enough to experience the main highlights, including caldera views, beaches, and a sunset cruise. This is what I recommend if you want to spend One Week in the Greek Islands and visit another island with Santorini – like Milos! If you want a more relaxed pace or plan to explore more of the island, five to seven days is ideal. Read my guide on how many days to spend on Santorini here!
Getting Around Santorini
Before we wrap up, let’s cover the top ways of getting around the island and what I recommend depending on where you are staying.
In general, you have a few options for getting around Santorini: public bus, private transfer, taxi, rental vehicle, and/or walking.
We opted not to rent our own vehicle while on Santorini since we were staying in Oia and didn’t expect to leave that area much.
However, if I were to do it again, I would definitely rent an ATV or car, at least for one day!
Buses in Santorini
We ended up taking the bus 2 out of the 3 days we were on Santorini and did not have a great experience either time.
While the public buses are the most affordable way to get around (each ticket costs around $2 USD), they can be slow and behind schedule.
All routes connect through the main bus station in Fira, which can complicate and lengthen trips between other areas.
For example, on our first day, we decided to hit Kamari beach in the south. To get to Kamari from Oia via bus, you first need to grab the bus from Oia to Fira, then change buses in Fira to Kamari. This journey took us around 1.5 hours (instead of 20 minutes if we had our own car).
If you’re staying in Fira, it would be much easier to rely on the bus system, but if you’re staying in Oia, I don’t recommend it. Especially if you only have a few days on Santorini and time is of the essence!

Private Transportation and Taxis
On the flip side, renting a car gives you flexibility, but can be pricey depending on how long you’re staying. Plus, narrow streets and limited parking spaces in the caldera towns can make driving a little stressful.
ATVs are probably a better option, as they’re easier to navigate and park. They’re great for short trips between villages and beach areas, though you’ll want to be cautious on hilly or busy roads.
(We rented an ATV for our 3 days on Milos and had an amazing experience!!).
Taxis are available but can be hard to find, especially during peak season. When you do find one, expect to pay high prices. For example, a ride from Oia to the airport could easily cost around $50+ USD.
If you plan to rely on taxis frequently, costs can rack up fast. Always confirm the fare beforehand, as meters are rarely used.
We found private transfers to be the most convenient option, especially for airport and ferry port pickups. On our first and last days, we booked transfers through GetYourGuide, which were cheaper than both taxis and the quotes we received from our hotel.
If you want a smooth, pre-arranged experience, this is the way to go!
🚙 To summarize:
- Taxis are expensive; opt for private transportation for pre-arranged trips instead
- A car or ATV is preferred if you want to explore around the island
- Buses are slow and not very reliable, but cheap. Ok option from Fira
Final Thoughts
I hope this guide on where to stay in Santorini has left you feeling a little more prepared for your trip! As you can see, each area offers a unique experience: Oia dazzles with sunsets, Fira keeps you in the heart of the action, Imerovigli offers serene luxury, and Kamari or Perissa provide beachside relaxation.
While you really can’t go wrong with any destination, it’s important to consider what’s most important to you before choosing where to stay.
Are you looking for the most iconic views or just the cheapest room? Do you want to be near the beach, have your own private pool, or just be away from all crowds?
We chose Oia for our first trip, but next time I return with my husband, I’d consider Imerovigli for the luxurious and romantic vibes, or Kamari Beach if I bring my family!
Whatever you pick, book early — the good rooms go fast, especially in summer!!
