A Complete Guide on Where to Stay in Milos, Greece: Areas of The Island, Best Hotels, & More

Overview of the Island

Milos, Greece is part of the Cyclades island chain in the Aegean Sea. The island is around 60 square miles (160 square km), making it larger than some of the more famous neighboring islands like Santorini and Mykonos.

While it may look large, most places you will visit on Milos are congregated on the eastern half of the island, as you can see on the map below!

The four most popular areas on the island, which I will cover in this post, are Adamantas (orange), Pollonia (blue), Paliochori (purple), and Plaka (green)!

How to Get to Milos

How you get to Milos will depend on where you’re starting from, your budget, your preferences and your itinerary! Your two primary options are to fly or take a ferry.

If you’re traveling from nearby islands, taking a ferry is the most common method. In the summer months, ferries run multiple times a day between Milos and other neighboring islands. However, delays and cancellations are common, so be prepared and flexible! Oh, and don’t forget to pack your Dramamine.

If you’re traveling directly from Athens to Milos, I recommend flying. Flight costs are around the same (if not cheaper) as the ferry but will be much faster. The flight from Athens to Milos only takes 45 minutes.

It’s important to know that Milos Airport (MLO) is extremely small and has 2 airlines that fly in and out of it: Sky Express and Aegean Airlines. In the summer months, there are typically 5-10 flights a day to and from Athens.

However, I recommend flying early! The airplanes that fly to and from Athens are quite small and can’t take off in high winds that might pick up as the day goes on.

Note: You can fly from other islands like Santorini and Mykonos to Milos; however, your flight will most likely connect in Athens, which adds a few hours to the journey!

Where to Stay in Milos: Breakdown by Area

Now that you have a feel for the island and how to get there, let’s get into the different areas and the best places to stay on Milos!

Milos is divided into a few main neighborhoods around the island, and they are somewhat spread out from each other. For this reason, I highly recommend renting a car or ATV when visiting Milos.

You can read more about the different transportation options and what I personally recommend in my Ultimate Milos Travel Guide!

Adamantas (Adamas): The Port

The first area to cover is Adamantas! Adamantas, or sometimes called just Adamas, is the main town of Milos where the port is located. If you arrive on Milos via ferry, you will arrive in Adamantas!

Because it is a port town, Adamantas is a bustling area of Milos, full of different restaurants, shops, and hotels. If you want to be in the middle of the action, Adamantas is the place to stay!

Adamantas also has a scenic promenade that offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll, and it’s also a great place to watch the sunset.

In fact, just outside Adamantas is Papikinou Beach, one of the best beaches in Milos to watch the sunset. The water is extremely calm at this beach, making it a popular place for families and children.

So, if you’re looking for a super quiet Greek village to stay in during your time on Milos, Adamantas probably isn’t it! Don’t worry, there are other areas in Milos like this, which I will cover later in this blog post!

Best Hotels in Adamantas

If Adamantas does sound like the perfect spot for you thanks to its central location, below are some of the best hotels in the area, which will help you decide where to stay in Milos.

Hotel Rigas: Located across the street from the Milos Mining Museum, Hotel Rigas is one of the top-rated hotels on the entire island of Milos. Located just 50 meters from the ocean, all of the rooms here have large verandas that overlook the garden, the village, or the sea.

Aelios Hotel: Another great place to stay in Adamantas is the Aelios Hotel. This hotel is conveniently located just a few blocks from the main town center, so you’ll be close to all restaurants and shops. You’ll fall in love with its classic white walls, sky blue doors, and family-run atmosphere!

Civitas Milos: If you’re looking for a bit of luxury during your time on Milos, Civitas Milos is a great choice. This boutique hotel only has 6 rooms, but they are special. Each suite has its own plunge pool outside and loungers nestled between the rocky walls. Guests say the staff is incredible, making it one of the best places to stay on Milos.

Note: If you are planning a trip to Milos for summer, I highly recommend booking your accommodation as early as possible! The most popular hotels on the island can book up 6+ months in advance!

Pollonia: Lively Beach Town

Pollonia is the second largest area on Milos, located on the northern tip of the island. Known for its picturesque fishing village charm, Pollonia offers a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere compared to the busier streets of Adamas.

Here, you can relax on the beach, dine at seaside tavernas, or take boat excursions to nearby attractions.

Pollonia has quite a few restaurants, including the famous Akrotiri Seafood Obsession, and one of the only “bars” on the island – Opsidianos Art Cafe.

Overall, Pollonia is a great place to stay if you’re looking to be on the beach but nearby some restaurants and shops too! It is also near some of Milos’s most famous beaches like Papafragas Caves and Sarakiniko Beach.

Best Hotels in Pollonia

Below are the best hotels available in and around Pollonia for those looking for a little beach town!

Delmar Apartments & Suites: Located in the heart of Pollonia, Delmar Apartments and Suites is one of the best places to stay on Milos for couples! The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, and the staff is incredible! Delmart is also walking distance from the best restaurants in Pollonia!

Salt Suites: Another truly incredible stay in Milos can be found at the gorgeous Salt Suites. This hotel is located right on the water’s edge and offers stunning sunset views. The more luxurious rooms open right up to the sea, and some even have private hot tubs. Breakfast is delivered to your room each morning in a wooden basket – how cute!

Milos Breeze: Last but not least is the stunning Milos Breeze hotel. Located just outside the main area of Pollonia, Milos Breeze is bit larger than the others on this list. Its most drawing feature is the incredible infinity pool that overlooks the town of Pollonia. There’s also an on-site restaurant and spa!

Paliochori: Quiet but Gorgeous

Tucked away on the southeastern coast of Milos lies the picturesque seaside village of Paliochori (also spelled Paleochori), renowned for its stunning beaches, thermal springs, and dramatic cliffs.

This is personally where we stayed while visiting Milos; however, I didn’t realize just how “off-the-beaten” this area is. Paliochori is tucked away from the main roads and towns of Milos. The area is not very walkable like Adamantas or Pollonia, so keep that in mind if you decide to stay here!

However, if you are looking to be on a beautiful beach away from the crowds, this is the perfect spot for you!

Note: Greece is not known for its sandy beaches, thanks to the volcanic substructure! However, the tiny pebbles at Paliochori aren’t too bad on your feet. If you’re looking for a sandy beach, check out Firiplaka Beach.

One of Paleochori’s most unique attractions is its natural thermal springs. Fed by underground hot springs, the mineral-rich waters are believed to have therapeutic properties. In addition, the nearby restaurant Sirocco uses the thermal activity to cook a variety of dishes on its menu!

Best Hotels in Paliochori

There aren’t nearly as many places to stay around Paliochori as there are in Pollonia or Adamantas, but the options are still beautiful!

Artemis Deluxe Rooms: This is where we stayed during our time on Milos, and we loved it! Artemis Deluxe Rooms boasts clean and cozy rooms and a fantastic staff. There is an incredible infinity pool that overlooks the ocean. In addition, you’ll have direct access to Paliochori beach and get to use the loungers and cabana beds for free! There is also an on-site restaurant with beautiful beach views.

Psaravolada Milos Resort: On the other side of Paliochori lies the gorgeous Psaravolada Milos Resort. This resort is situated between Paliochori Beach and Agia Kiriaki Beach, so you get the best of both beach worlds! The hotel is made up of 12 newly-built rooms and suites that are connected via cobbled paths. Although there is no pool, there is an on-site restaurant!

Plaka: Small and Stunning

Last but not least on this list of where to stay in Milos is Plaka!

Plaka is a small town on the northwest tip of the island, perched on a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea. Plaka is the cultural and historical hub of Milos, and its habitation goes back to the Neolithic era. In fact, it’s the place where the world-famous Venus de Milo statue was found!

The town of Plaka is exactly what you’d picture a Greek town to look like, with its whitewashed buildings, blue doors, and bougainvillea flowers decorating the cobblestone streets. In fact, the narrow streets of Plaka are pedestrian-only, and no motorized vehicles are allowed in Plaka!

One of the most popular things to do in Plaka to watch the sunset, thanks to its high vantage point on the island. You can head to the Venetian Castle of Milos or the Church of Panagia Korfiatissa for the best views!

If you’re into spooky things, you can also check out the Catacombs of Milos, located on the outskirts of Plaka. Nearby, I also highly recommend grabbing dinner on Klima Beach, another great place to watch the sunset!

Best Hotels in Plaka

Thanks to its location perched high above the island, most places to stay in Plaka offer stunning views of the Aegean Sea. Here are the best spots around Plaka!

Halara Studios: Rated number one on Tripadvisor for hotels in Plaka, Halara Studios stands tall in the heart of Plaka! The rooms here are bright and clean, and the staff is extremely friendly. Some of their rooms have private balconies with stunning views of the sea!

Vivere Houses: Another fabulous place to stay on Milos is the Vivere Houses. Technically just outside Plaka in the village of Plakes, the Vivere Houses are perfect for larger groups who need more space. As the name suggests, these residences are actually small homes and apartments you can rent. There are 1, 2, and 3 bedroom options, and some even have small pools and jacuzzis!

Klima Bay Beachfront Houses: Remember that beach I mentioned above, just down the road from Plaka? Well, you can actually stay right on it in the adorable Klima Bay Beachfront Boutique Houses. These colorful homes are located right on the water’s edge and offer fabulous views of the Aegean. Each house has a private terrace and its own kitchen as well!
