How to Spend 3 Days on Oahu: The Perfect Oahu Itinerary for First Timers!

Are you planning a trip to Hawaii and wondering how to spend 3 days on Oahu?

The island of Oahu is Hawaii’s most visited island, and for good reason! Home to Hawaii’s capital, Honolulu, and some of the most diverse range of activities, there’s something for everyone on this incredible island.

I was lucky enough to spend a week on Oahu in 2022 for work, and I can’t wait to go back someday soon!

In this 3 day Oahu itinerary, I cover all the must-dos on the island of Oahu, from hiking Diamond Head Mountain to surfing at Waikiki Beach across 3 days. I’ll also cover where to stay, how to get around, and more!

If you’ve never visited Oahu before, I recommend spending at least 3 days on the island to be able to see and do a majority of what it has to offer. Keep reading to find out exactly how to spend those 3 days!

Important Note: As you’ll notice in this itinerary, a lot of activities require advance reservations. Hawai’i is a very popular travel destination, so I highly recommend booking as many things in advance as you can!

The Ultimate 3 Day Oahu Itinerary for First-Timers

Below is a map of Oahu that includes all of the hotel, activities, and restaurants mentioned in this itinerary! Make sure to save it for your trip!

Renting a Car on Oahu

The island of Oahu is quite large and spread out. Since you will be spending 3 days on Oahu, you will need to rent a car! This itinerary includes trips to places like North Shore and Kualoa Ranch, which are about an hour away from the Waikiki area.

I highly recommend using DiscoverCars.com. They allow you to compare prices across all of the major rental car companies. Plus, they have a great cancellation policy (typically free cancellation up to 48 hours in advance). Oh, and they price match!

Where to stay on Oahu

Before we get into the itinerary, I wanted to touch on where to stay while on Oahu! The island of Oahu is fairly large, and as you can see on the map above, the activities in this itinerary are spread across the island.

To give you some frame of reference, it typically takes about an hour to drive from Waikiki on the southern end of the island to the North Shore (all the way at the top of the island). This itinerary is organized so you are not driving around the whole island every day.

Below, I’ll cover the 3 main areas of the island for lodging so you can decide which is right for you!

Staying in Waikiki

When it comes to choosing where to base yourself, I recommend most people stay in Waikiki for their first visit to Oahu. Waikiki is the most convenient area on the island and puts you right in the heart of all the action.

Waikiki is home to the iconic Waikiki Beach, where you’ll find tons of restaurants, surf shops, bars, and high-rise resorts. You’ll also find a mix of travelers here, from families to honeymooners to solo adventurers. The energy around Waikiki is lively and walkable, and it’s a great home base for first-time visitors to Hawaii.

The only downside is that it can feel touristy and crowded, especially during peak season. If you are coming to Hawaii to relax on a quiet beach away from the crowds, Waikiki is not the place for you!

Pssst: Make sure to check out my list of the 13 Best Things to Do in Waikiki so you don’t miss anything in the area!

Below are some top hotels in Waikiki to consider!

  • Budget Option: Waikiki Malia – Budget and Waikiki don’t really go together, but the Waikiki Malia has rooms regularly under $200. It’s not beachfront, but it’s just a few blocks from Waikiki Beach and close to plenty of shops and restaurants.
  • Mid-Range Option: Hilton Hawaiian Village – This is a massive resort complex with multiple towers, pools, restaurants, and beach access. It’s perfect if you want an all-in-one experience in the heart of Waikiki.
  • Luxury Option: Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort – Often called the “First Lady of Waikiki,” this beachfront hotel has a gorgeous veranda and unbeatable ocean views. It’s historic and beautiful—definitely a splurge-worthy stay.

Staying on North Shore

If you’re looking for a slower pace and fewer crowds, consider staying up on North Shore. It’s famous for its laid-back vibe, big waves, and surf culture. It’s about an hour from Waikiki, so you’ll spend more time driving if you base yourself here—but the scenery is worth it!

Because the North Shore is more of a local spot, there aren’t many hotel options. You’ll typically have better luck with vacation rentals along the North Shore, especially for budget/moderate travelers.

However, if you’re looking for a luxurious experience, I highly recommend checking out the famous Turtle Bay Resort (now called the Ritz-Carlton O’ahu, which offers stunning ocean views, a golf course, and its own beaches. It’s also the setting of many famous movies in Hawaii!

Staying in Kailua

Kailua is another great alternative if you’re craving more of a local, residential feel. Located about 25 minutes from Waikiki, Kailua has beautiful beaches, a chill town center, and easy access to hikes like the Lanikai Pillbox Trail.

Just keep in mind that there are no big resorts here—it’s mostly vacation rentals and smaller boutique properties.

Day 0: Arriving on Oahu

This itinerary assumes you are arriving to Oahu in the late afternoon or evening, so the real fun begins on Day 1!

To get to Oahu, you will fly into Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu! The airport is located on the south side of the island, just 20 minutes from the famous Waikiki Beach and 30 minutes from North Shore.

After landing, pick up your rental car and head to your hotel.

Day 1: Pearl Harbor, Surfing, & Sunset Cruise

Morning: Visiting the Pearl Harbor National Memorial

Day 1 of this perfect Oahu itinerary starts off with some activities in and around Waikiki. You won’t venture too far today in case you need to take a quick siesta back at your hotel 😉

To begin the day, head to one of the famous attractions on the island of Oahu – the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Located about 20-30 minutes away from Waikiki (depending on traffic), the Memorial is a must visit during your time on Oahu.

The best part? It’s free! There’s no entry fee for the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, and no ticket is required to see the museums. To see the USS Arizona Memorial (via a short boat ride), you can wait in the free standby line or secure a reservation for $1.

Or, if you don’t have a rental car, you can book an organized tour that includes hotel pick up and drop off! This is also a great option for those who want a guided tour to learn more!

Afternoon: Explore Waikiki Beach

When you’re finished taking in everything Pearl Harbor has to offer, make your way back to Waikiki. Grab some lunch at one of the many delicious restaurants in the area, like Paiea Fish Market or Lulu’s.

After lunch, wander around Waikiki and explore the many shops, restaurants, and vendors. Head down to the beach and see the famous Duke Kahanamoku Statue!

If you’re interested, this is the perfect time and place to take a surf lesson! I took a lesson with Moku Surf Shop, but there are tons of places in the area to choose from! Waikiki Beach is a great place for beginners to learn, as the surf break is relatively small year-round.

Evening: Go on a Sunset Cruise

To cap off your first night in paradise, spend the evening on a sunset cruise!! There are many options to choose from. Some companies, like Hawaii Nautical, offer tours that include alcoholic drinks and appetizers, for around $100. Other tours are cheaper and BYOB, like this one from Living Ocean Tours.

I personally recommend the Moana Sunset Cocktail sail! This 2 hour tour includes a free cocktail and offers incredible views of Oahu!

Make sure to check out my full guide on the Best Waikiki Sunset Cruises for even more information!

Moana’s Sunset Cocktail Sail

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Cost: $69 per person
  • Rating: 5/5 stars⭐
  • Includes: First cocktail free!

Day 2: Waterfalls, Jurassic Park, and North Shore

Morning: Explore Mānoa Falls Trail

Your second day on Oahu will be action-packed, so make sure to rest up and start with a big breakfast! Then, it’s time to make your way from Waikiki to the Mānoa Falls Trail, about 30 minutes away.

This trail is very popular, so it’s best to get an early start! The hike is moderately easy, about a 1.7-mile out-and-back trail that should take around an hour to complete.

Mānoa Falls Trail is open year-round, but the waterfall will be most impressive during rainy season! Make sure to wear stable shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy. These Columbia hiking boots are my personal favorite!

You can read about the other waterfall hikes in my complete guide to the Best Waterfall Hikes on Oahu here!

Afternoon: Visit the Famous Kualoa Ranch

After you’ve finished the hike, it’s time to make your way to another iconic spot on Oahu – Kualoa Ranch! Never heard of Kualoa Ranch? You’ve probably still seen it before!

Tons of famous movies were filmed here, like Jurassic Park & World, 50 First Dates, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla, and TONS more.

In addition to being a famous movie set, the ranch is also a working cattle farm. They offer a ton of different tours and activities, the most popular being the UTV Raptor Tour, Hollywood Movie Sites Tour, and the Horseback Riding Tour.

Save this post for later!

Enter your info below and I'll email you the link to this blog post so you can refer back to it later 🙂

The Ranch is absolutely beautiful, full of lush landscapes and epic views of the island! Unfortunately, I didn’t get to go down into the Jurassic Valley, but seeing it from above was pretty incredible!

They also have a small cafeteria and gift shop on site! I got an açai bowl from the cafeteria, and it was surprisingly delicious!

Whichever tour you decide on at Kualoa Ranch, I highly recommend booking in advance, especially during high season! This will guarantee you get to experience this amazing place on your trip! It is absolutely worth a visit.

If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii but can’t decide which island to visit, make sure to read my comparison guide between Oahu and the Big Island here!

Evening: Watch the surfers and Hit the Food Trucks on North Shore

After finishing up at Kualoa Ranch, make your way up the coast to the famous North Shore. The drive from Kualoa Ranch to North Shore is absolutely stunning, and you’ll probably see many places to stop and take photos.

If you haven’t eaten lunch yet, I highly recommend stopping at the Shrimp Shack food truck on your drive. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but it was incredible. I got the garlic shrimp platter and ate it across the road at their tables on the beach.

As you continue along the north side of the island, you’ll stumble upon the famous areas of North Shore like the Banzai Pipeline (great place to watch the surfers) and Haleʻiwa (home of the famous Matsumoto’s Shaved Ice!).

The Banzai Pipeline is located off of Ehukai Beach Park, where you can park and walk onto the beach. This is an incredible place to stop for a bit, especially during winter, to see the impressive waves!

Haleʻiwa is the main town of the North Shore and a fun place to walk around. It’s full of boutique stores, surf shops, art galleries, and more! Plus, this is also where the famous food trucks are.

You can also head down to the Alii Beach Park nearby and look for sea turtles!

Make sure to check out my guide to the Best Things to Do on North Shore here!

If you’re interested, the Dole Plantation is also just 15 minutes down the road from Haleʻiwa! I personally decided to skip the Dole Plantation since it looked a little touristy, but I think it would be great to do with kids!

For sunset, I highly recommend heading to Waimea Bay Beach Park, where the waves are massive in the winter, and the sunset views are incredible. They actually had a lifeguard on duty telling people when to move back when the big swell were coming in.

If you’re interested in a fancy dinner, you can head to the famous Turtle Bay Resort (where Forgetting Sarah Marshall was filmed). This is also another great place to watch the sunset!

Or, if you’re looking for something more casual, check out one of the famous North Shore food trucks!

Day 3: Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay

Morning: Hiking Diamond Head (or Koko Crater)

On the last day of this Oahu itinerary, you will explore the southeast end of the island, one of my favorite parts! To start the day, you’ll be visiting the famous Diamond Head State Monument!

Known for its hiking trail, gorgeous coastal views, and military history, Diamond Head is a must do while visiting Oahu, and it’s perfect for the whole family!

The park is typically open daily from 6am to 6pm (except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day). It costs $5 per person to enter and $10 to park. It’s recommended to make a reservation to guarantee your entry!

The hike to the summit is a moderate hike that typically takes around an hour to complete. Along the hike, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Waikiki and Honolulu.

If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, another great option nearby is the Koko Crater Railway Trail. This hike is much more intense than the Diamond Head hike, so I only recommend it if you are in good physical condition.

The hike takes you up 1,048 steps along old railway ties to the top of Koko Head Crater. It’s basically a giant stair master, but the views from the top are worth it! I recommend doing this hike at sunrise.

Afternoon: Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay

After breaking a sweat on your morning hike, it’s time to cool off and get in the gorgeous Hawaiian water! Luckily, you’ll be heading to one of the best snorkeling spots on the island – Hanauma Bay State Park and Nature Preserve!

Hanauma Bay is about 20 minutes away from Diamond Head and only 5 minutes away from Koko Crater!

This Bay has a strong history to the Hawaiian people, and in 1990, they made a commitment to restoring and preserving the natural environment after years of overuse. Today, advance reservations are required to get into the park, which limits the amount of daily visitors to 1400.

I really enjoyed my time snorkeling at Hanuama Bay. It was so fun being able to snorkel right off the beach and see incredible coral heads and tropical fish. There are also many turtles in this area!

If you don’t have your own snorkel equipment, you can rent some onsite!

Make sure to read my Guide to Visiting Hanauma Bay for important information about the reservation and entry process!

Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii

The park is only open Wednesdays through Sundays, with entry allowed from 6:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m, so plan your trip accordingly! If you won’t be on Oahu during these days of the week, another great snorkel spot is Kahe Point Beach Park (Electric Beach).

You could also book an organized snorkeling excursion like this Turtle Canyon Snorkeling Tour!

Evening: Luau or Sunset Dinner

If you’ve never visited Hawai’i before, I highly recommend spending your last night on Oahu at a luau! The most authentic experience on the island will be at the Polynesian Cultural Center, where they offer several different options and packages.

Other popular luaus include the Toa Luau on North Shore or the Chief’s Luau in Kapolei near Disney’s Aulani Resort.

Not interested in a luau? No worries! There are tons of great dinner options left to hit in the Waikiki area. My favorite restaurants are Duke’s Waikiki (famous for their mai tais) or RumFire at the Sheraton (incredible vibes and sunset view!).

Enjoy your last night in paradise!

Honorable Mentions

As you can see, this 3 day Oahu itinerary is already action-packed! However, if you find yourself with some extra time on your trip, here are some other popular things to do on Oahu!

Kailua Area

Located 25 minutes from Waikiki, the Kailua area of Oahu is a very popular destination for locals and tourists! There’s plenty to do in the area, so I recommend spending a half day here if you have time.

If you’re a hiker, you can conquer the epic Lanikai Pillbox hike. This 1.6-mile out-and-back trail is moderately difficult but relatively short. I recommend doing it at sunrise or later in the afternoon for epic ocean views and beautiful lighting.

Another fun thing to do in the area is kayak to the Mokulua islands, also known as “The Mokes”. These two islets lay off the coast of Lanikai Beach and are most commonly reached by sea kayaking!

You can rent kayaks from the beach and make the journey yourself, but I personally recommend booking a guided kayaking tour! Sea kayaking can be a little intense, and going with a guide will ensure you take the best route and land at the right spot given the sea conditions.

Lastly, if you just want to relax, there are some beautiful white-sand beaches on this side of Oahu, some of the best on the island! Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach are the two most popular.

Makapuʻu Lookout and SeaLife Park

Another great area to check out if you have more time is the Makapuʻu, located on the southeastern tip of the island. Here, you can make the 1.2 mile hike to Makapuʻu Lookout for incredible views of the ocean and coastline.

Or, there is also the Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail, a separate hike that leads to the beautiful white lighthouse. This 2.5-mile out-and-back trail is moderately challenging; however, it is paved the entire way so totally doable for families!

Just down the road from these trails is Sea Life Park, a marine mammal aquarium right on the ocean that has dolphins, turtles, and more! This is a great option for families. If you have seen the movie 50 First Dates, you’ll recognize this park!

Final Thoughts

That wraps up my Ultimate Oahu itinerary! I hope I’ve shown you how incredible this Hawaiian island is.

From waterfalls to movie sets, to epic sunsets, to incredible hikes, there’s no shortage of adventure on the island of Oahu! Have an amazing trip!
