Pros and Cons of Having a Puerto Rico Bachelorette Party

Having your bachelorette party in Puerto Rico certainly isn’t for everyone! Below, I’ll cover the pros and cons of having a Puerto Rico bachelorette party so you can make the best decision for you and your group. Let’s start with the pros!

Pros

No Passport Required: Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, which means American citizens do not need a passport to enter Puerto Rico. So, if you want to experience a new country and culture for your bachelorette party, but don’t want to deal with the hassle of passports, Puerto Rico is a great option!

English Widely Spoken: Surprisingly, Spanish and English are both official languages of Puerto Rico! While Spanish is spoke between locals, almost all businesses around San Juan speak English too. So, you don’t need to worry about speaking another language to have a bachelorette party here!

Cheap Flights from the United States: Another perk of having a Puerto Rico bachelorette party is that you can often find cheap flights into Puerto Rico. The capital, San Juan, has its own international airport (SJU) that is served by major airlines and U.S. cities!

Variety of Activities: Puerto Rico might look like a small country, but it packs a punch! There are tons of different things to do in Puerto Rico, making it a great destination for a bachelorette party. Puerto Rico has beautiful beaches, lush jungle, great snorkeling, historic towns, incredible food and restaurants, and more!

Warm Weather: Thanks to its location close to the equator, the weather in Puerto Rico is warm and sunny year-round. Winter in Puerto Rico still sees highs in the 80s and lows in the 70s, so you never have to worry about being cold!

Cons

Petty Crime: There aren’t many cons of planning a bachelorette party in Puerto Rico, but I will name a few! First, like other Caribbean countries, crime can be a concern when visiting Puerto Rico. Although the worst you typically see in tourist areas is petty crime like pickpocketing, there is always a chance of more serious crimes. However, you can say this about most countries!

Hurricane Season: Although the warm weather is certainly a perk, it’s not without its flaws. June – November brings the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Puerto Rico has seen its fair share of hurricanes, most notably hurricane Maria in 2017 which destroyed many parts of the island. Hurricane season in Puerto Rico typically peaks in August and September, so factor that into your travel plans.

TOO much to see: While this isn’t really a con, it might be if you’re planning a bachelorette party in Puerto Rico. Since most bachelorette parties only last 2-4 days, you won’t be able to see all the country has to offer. Most bachelorette parties in Puerto Rico stick to San Juan area, which is just scratching the surface of this incredible country!

Getting to Puerto Rico

As mentioned above, getting to Puerto Rico for a bachelorette party couldn’t be easier! This itinerary focuses on the areas around San Juan Puerto Rico. Luckily, the main airport on the island is just outside the capital city of San Juan in Carolina – Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport (SJU).

Many popular airlines fly into SJU, like American Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest, and Delta. In addition, you can find direct flights from many different US cities, including Fort Lauderdale, Boston, Atlanta, New York, Chicago, and more!

If you are traveling in off-season (June to November), you can usually find direct flights for less than $200! (You might even be able to find this during peak season).

We visited during spring break time (March), so prices were a little inflated. We paid between $300-$400 for direct flights from Florida.

Where to Stay in Puerto Rico for a Bachelorette Party

If you are planning a trip to Puerto Rico for a bachelorette party, there are 3 popular areas I recommend choosing between: Condado, Old San Juan, and Isla Verde.

Condado

Condado is basically the “Miami Beach” of Puerto Rico. Here, you’ll find a collection of upscale resorts and restaurants to choose from. This is a very popular tourist area, so you can walk around at night and feel safe here.

The beach in Condado is beautiful; however, it can often see pretty large waves and rip tides, so it’s not the best for swimming!

Here are some popular hotels in Condado that are great for bachelorette parties:

Old San Juan

Next up is Old San Juan, or Viejo San Juan! This area is the perfect blend of history, culture, and nightlife. The cobblestone streets are lined with colorful buildings, renowned restaurants, and plenty of bars. The area is extremely walkable, and you’re right next to iconic landmarks like the Castillo San Felipe del Morro.

Because it’s so historic, there aren’t many fancy hotels in this part of Puerto Rico. Instead, you’re better off staying in an Airbnb or VRBO for a bachelorette party! You can check out some options on the map below.

There are a couple beaches around Old San Juan; however, if you are looking to stay ON the beach in a big name hotel, this is not the area for you!

Since this area has tons of nightlife and restaurant, it can get loud at night with parties, so be aware of that if you decide to stay here!

Isla Verde

Last up is Isla Verde! This is where we decided to stay for our Puerto Rico bachelorette party.

Isla Verde is considered the most beautiful beach in the San Juan area. The sand was soft and the waves were small, perfect for swimming!

There are a handful of beautiful hotels to choose from in the area, most notably the Fairmont El San Juan Resort. If you can afford it, I highly recommend staying here! This resort has 3 incredible pools (more on this later!), a casino, a popping lobby bar, and the most popular nightclub in San Juan – Brava!

We stayed at the nearby Casa Costera Apartments by Marriott, which was reasonably priced and had large, apartment-style rooms! There is also the Royal Sonesta San Juan and the Courtyard Isla Verde Beach Resort in the area!

Although there are many hotels on Isla Verde, there wasn’t too much nightlife or restaurants within walking distance. However, we had no problem Ubering to other areas at night! If you are looking to walk around at night near your hotel, this isn’t the area for you.

Puerto Rico Bachelorette Party Itinerary

Now that we’ve covered how to get to Puerto Rico and where to stay for a bachelorette party, let’s go over the different things you can do! Below, I’m providing a sample 3 day itinerary to make it easy to plan your own Puerto Rico bachelorette party!

Day 1: Arrive in PR + Explore Old San Juan

Your first day of this itinerary will depend on what time everyone arrives. Of course, I recommend arriving as early as possible so you can maximize time to explore!

After you land, drop your bags off at your hotel and head straight to Old San Juan!

Here, you can wander around the colorful neighborhoods and experience Puerto Rican culture. If you’re interested, you can partake in a food walking tour to taste some traditional Puerto Rican cuisine and learn more about the city from a local!

In the evening, grab dinner at La Madre, followed by after dinner drinks at the Cannon Club, a piano bar!

If you’re looking to keep the night going, make your way to La Factoria. This is arguably the most famous bar in Puerto Rico thanks to the song “Despacito“! The music video for this song was filmed in La Factoria, and it’s a great place to drink and dance the night away. There are even some hidden bars within if you can find them!

Day 2: El Yunque OR Snorkeling + La Placita

On the second day of your Puerto Rico bachelorette party, it’s time to get out of town for some adventure!

I am actually including two different options in this itinerary, so you can choose which activity fits your group better.

The first option is a day trip to the famous El Yunque National Forest, the ONLY tropical rainforest in the United States. Located about an hour away from San Juan, El Yunque makes for a perfect adventure day on a bachelorette party.

There are plenty of organized tours you can book that include pick up and drop off from San Juan, so don’t worry about renting a car!

Spend your day hiking to waterfalls, jumping off cliffs, and swinging on rope swings!! If you book a morning tour, some companies also include a stop at Luquillo Beach on the way back to San Juan for lunch!

If rainforests aren’t your thing, another great option is to go on a snorkeling tour or booze cruise. Most tours go to Culebra, a beautiful tropical island off the coast of Puerto Rico! You can spend the day snorkeling in turquoise water and lounging on the famous Flamenco Beach. You might even see a turtle or two in the water at the Luis Peña Marine Reserve.

Some tours also include a buffet lunch and open bar, depending on which you choose!

No matter which option you choose, you’ll probably get back later in the afternoon. Once everyone has showered and gotten ready, it’s time to head back out for dinner, drinks, and dancing at the famous La Placita!

First, grab dinner at Delavida for delicious Puerto Rican food and fun cocktails. After dinner, head across the street to La Placita de Santurce. This area is one of the most popular nightlife spots in Puerto Rico, with a collection of bars, restaurants, and food stalls all within a large block party.

There’s plenty of bars and clubs to choose from, and you can wander around until you find one that fits your vibe! We spent most of the night at TULUM, but there really is something for everyone. The area was popular with tourists and locals alike, and we felt very safe there!

Day 3: Pool Party + Condado Area

On your last full day in Puerto Rico, it’s time to close out the bachelorette party with a pool party!

Now, there are quite a few pools to choose from across various hotels, so you can choose whatever works best for you. Most hotel pools offer day passes through Resort Pass, which is very convenient if your hotel doesn’t have a pool!

We decided to get a cabana at the Fairmont El San Juan Resort, since our hotel’s pool wasn’t open yet. If you aren’t sure where to go, I highly recommend the Fairmont! The cabana service was so fun, plus they have a swim-up bar and a DJ on the weekends!

We had a blast partying the day away here. Plus, you can pop in and out between the beach and the pool.

Other hotels with awesome pools include the Royal Sonesta San Juan, Condado Ocean Club, and La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort.

If you still have energy, spend the last night of your Puerto Rico bachelorette party exploring the Condado area. As mentioned earlier, this neighborhood has a multitude of upscale restaurants, bars, and nightlife to choose from.

If you make it in time for sunset, head to Ola, an incredible rooftop restaurant that has stunning views of the ocean!
