Key West is one of my favorite destinations in Florida, especially when it comes to planning a romantic getaway! My husband and I recently visited Key West for an anniversary trip, and I was shocked by how romantic Key West can be!
In this complete guide, I’ll cover all the different things to do in Key West for couples, including activities on the water, where to eat, and even romantic places to stay!
From stunning sunsets to intimate dinners, Key West offers endless opportunities for couples visiting the island, so keep reading to find out my top recommendations!

My top recommendation for anyone visiting Key West is to get out on the water, and couples are no different!! Here are my top ocean-based activities to do in Key West for couples.
Jet Skiing around the Island
If you and your partner are adrenaline junkies, jet skiing around the island is a thrilling way to explore Key West. I mean, what’s more romantic than having to hold onto each other for dear life?!
But really, jet skiing around the island is one of the best ways to experience Key West, and you’ll get to see some famous landmarks from a different perspective.
There are plenty of tour companies that offer jet skiing. This tour charges per jet ski (instead of per person), giving you the best bang for your bucket!
It also includes a relaxing stop at a local sand bar during the tour!
Kayaking through the Mangroves
For something a little more relaxed (and cheaper), kayaking is a very peaceful way to enjoy the island from the water!
The calm waters around Key West make it an ideal spot for beginners, and you can explore the mangroves on a tour or at your own pace.
For $60 per person, this mangrove kayaking tour includes 2 hours of exploring the waters of Key West with an experienced guide. Along the way, you can see tons of wildlife including birds, sponges, cucumbers, and fish! Plus, it’s dog friendly!
We did this tour a few years back and absolutely loved it! It doesn’t even feel like you’re in Key West.
Go on a Romantic Sunset Cruise
One of the most romantic things to do in Key West is to go a sunset cruise! The sunsets in Key West are next-level, and seeing them from the water while listening to tropical music just adds to the romance.
There are plenty of sunset cruise options in Key West, from shared catamaran cruises to private charters. Obviously, private sunset cruises are more romantic, but pricey.
However, the bigger Key West sunset cruises often have live music or DJs, dancing, food, and open bars, which is more fun for some couples!
A good middle ground is this luxury sunset cruise that includes a wine and cheese pairing. It also takes place on a sailboat (instead of a catamaran) and is a small-group tour!
Overall, there’s nothing quite like watching the sun dip below the horizon with a rum runner in hand, making going on a sunset cruise one of the best things to do in Key West for couples!

Private Charter to Sandbars and Snorkeling
For a truly unique experience in Key West, consider booking a private boat charter to one of the sandbars near Key West.
These shallow, secluded spots are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or just relaxing with your partner. It’s like having your own private island for the day!
This is way better than booking a standard snorkel cruise in Key West, which are typically packed with tourists and not very romantic!
Take a Day Trip to Dry Tortugas National Park
If you have some extra time, and some extra budget, consider taking a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park. Located about 70 miles west of Key West, this national park is certainly one of the most unique in the USA.
The park is only accessible by ferry or seaplane, and I can personally say that the seaplane is the much more romantic option. (I haven’t actually been on the seaplane but the ferry was full of people throwing up, so I can make an educated guess… lol).
However, both options are pretty pricey, but it might be worth it for a romantic anniversary trip!
Once you’re on the island, you can explore the historic Fort Jefferson, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, or relax on pristine beaches.
You can even camp here if you want to! It’s very remote, but soo beautiful! Definitely one of the top things to do in Key West!
Land Activities for Couples in Key West
Besides getting out on the water, there are tons of other things to do in Key West for couples on dry land.
While a lot of the main attractions in Key West are more geared towards families (like the Aquarium, Treasure Museum, etc.), there are many other off-the-beaten-path activities for couples.
Walk on the Beach
While Key West isn’t known for its long stretches of sandy beaches, it does have some lovely spots where you can take a romantic stroll.
Smathers Beach is the largest public beach on the island, offering soft sand (which was imported from the Bahamas!) and calm waters. The beach is located on the southeast side of the island, across from the Key West airport.
It’s a great place for a sunset walk or even a morning stroll before the crowds arrive. However, it’s also a great place to enjoy a beach day, especially if you can find a spot away from the crowds!
Or, if you’re staying at a hotel like Casa Marina, you’ll have access to a private beach, which provides an even more intimate setting.
Another beach to check out is the one at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. While this can get popular with families, there are some areas where you can find privacy and go for a swim!
Relax at the Spa
For couples looking to unwind and rejuvenate, booking a couples’ spa day is a must in Key West. Many of Key West’s hotels offer luxurious spa services specifically designed for couples.
In addition, there are plenty of standalone spas that might be a little more cost-effective!

From side-by-side massages to aromatherapy treatments, a spa day can be the perfect way to relax and reconnect! We love doing spa days as a special occasion while on romantic vacations together.
Watch the Sunset at Mallory Square
You can’t visit Key West without experiencing the famous sunset celebration at Mallory Square! It’s one of the top free things to do in Key West.
This nightly event is a beloved tradition in Key West, where locals and tourists alike gather to watch the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico. Street performers, local vendors, and live music add to the festive atmosphere in Old Town.
While you’ll find plenty of families and kids here as well, the sunset celebration is still a romantic place to watch the sky transform into vibrant shades of orange, pink, and purple as the sailboats cruise by.
Bring a blanket, find a spot to sit along the water, and enjoy the show! I recommend arriving early to get a good seat, but expect the crowds to fill in as it gets closer to sunset.
Bike Riding Around the Island
Key West is small and flat, making it the perfect destination for exploring via bike. Many hotels offer bike rentals, or you can rent them from one of the many local shops like Eaton Bikes.
My husband and I loved biking around the island together on our last trip to Key West, exploring the charming streets and stopping at local coffee shops and hidden gems along the way!
One of the best places to ride is along A1A on the southern portion of the island, starting up by the airport and then down past Smathers Beach into Old Town. Here, you’ll have incredible views of the ocean and a great breeze!
Explore the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory
If you and your partner love nature, the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is a magical spot. This indoor conservatory is home to hundreds of butterflies and exotic birds, all housed in a lush, tropical setting.
Walking through the peaceful space feels like stepping into another world, and it’s a perfect spot for couples to enjoy a quiet, intimate experience!
Go on a Haunted Ghost Tour
Another fun and romantic (in a weird way?) is going on a haunted ghost tour when visiting Key West!
Key West is actually a very spooky town. Did you know that the name Key West comes from Cayo Hueso, which means Bone Island in Spanish?
When Spanish settlers arrived in Key West, the island was covered in bones from the Calusa Indians who had once lived in the Florida Keys!
Creepy, right?
Needless to say, there are plenty of other spooky and haunted facts about Key West, and the best place to learn about them is on a ghost tour!! Or, to make it even more fun, consider a haunted pub crawl!!
Visit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum
Last but not least, for couples who enjoy a bit of history and literature, a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is a must do on any Key West Itinerary.
This iconic Key West landmark was once home to the famous writer, and it’s filled with fascinating artifacts from his life. In addition, the lush gardens surrounding the house are perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Here, you can learn about Hemingway’s life and of course see the famous six-toed cats that still roam the property! It’s a great way to spend a few hours, especially if you’re looking to escape the heat and enjoy some culture.

Where to Stay in Key West for Couples
Choosing the right place to stay in the Keys can really set the tone for your romantic getaway. Luckily, Key West has plenty of options for couples!

The Marquesa Hotel
Address: 600 Fleming St, Key West, FL
Average Cost: $300-$500 per night
Pros: Intimate setting, private pool
Cons: Not on the water
The Marquesa Hotel is an oasis in the heart of Old Town Key West. Its serene atmosphere and beautifully landscaped gardens make it feel like a hidden gem.
This boutique hotel offers a quiet retreat with just enough elegance to feel special but without the pretentiousness of larger resorts. The rooms are charming, and the pool area is perfect for lounging with a book or enjoying a cocktail!
There’s also an on-site restaurant, Café Marquesa, which offers a fine dining experience in a cozy atmosphere, perfect for couples.
Overall, the intimate setting, peaceful ambiance, and proximity to attractions make the Marquesa Hotel a great spot for couples looking to relax and explore Key West.
Ocean Key Resort and Spa
Address: 0 Duval Street, Key West, FL
Average Cost: $500-$700 per night
Pros: Ocean views, on-site spa
Cons: Can be pricey
Located right at the foot of Duval Street (literally – look at the address), Ocean Key Resort & Spa is where luxury meets vibrant island energy. This resort is as central as it gets, sandwiched between the ocean, Mallory Square, Sunset Pier, and Duval Street!
My favorite part of the resort is their oceanfront pool, which is exclusive to hotel guests. It has the most incredible views!! Plus, there are chic cabanas and a cocktail bar!
The rooms at Ocean Key also have stunning views of either the ocean or Mallory Square, making sunset-watching from your balcony a must. Plus, their onsite spa, SpaTerre, is perfect for couples looking to pamper themselves (more on that later in this post!).
Lastly, their on-site restaurant, Hot Tin Roof, is one of my favorites in Key West! In fact, it makes my list (later in this post) for one of the most romantic restaurants in Key West.
Overall, the location and vibes of Ocean Key Resort are truly unbeatable, especially if you love the idea of being in the heart of the action while still having a luxurious retreat to escape to.
The Perry Hotel & Marina
Address: 7001 Shrimp Rd, Key West, FL
Average Cost: $200-$350 per night
Pros: Pet-friendly, affordable, rustic
Cons: Further from Old Town
The Perry Hotel is a little off the beaten path, located on Stock Island, just a short drive from downtown Key West. It’s a newer, trendy spot that offers a quieter experience with a laid-back vibe.
The hotel’s waterfront location means you can enjoy boat views and stunning sunsets. It’s a great place to stay if you want a more relaxing experience away from the hustle and bustle of Duval Street.
Plus, they are pet-friendly and have two on-site restaurants, both serving up incredibly fresh seafood you can only find in the Keys!
If you’re looking for a chic, peaceful setting with easy access to water activities and stunning views, The Perry is an excellent option. It’s also the most affordable on the list!

Pros: Largest private beach in Key West, on-site spa, ultimate luxury

For those who want a more resort-like and luxurious experience, Casa Marina is a fantastic choice. It’s one of the few places in Key West with a private beach, making it ideal for couples who want to spend their days lounging by the ocean.
Recently renovated, Casa Marina is the epitome of luxury, while also emphasizing Key West’s tropical allure. There’s several dining options on property, as well as two oceanfront pools, one for families and one for adults.
Overall, the historic charm of the hotel, combined with modern amenities, gives you the best of both worlds. The private beach, luxurious spa, and romantic oceanfront dining make it a standout choice for couples.
However, it is an extremely pricey resort, one of the most expensive in Key West.

Best Restaurants in Key West for Couples
Now that we’ve covered where to stay, let’s talk about where to eat! Food is a big part of any vacation, and Key West is home to some amazing restaurants that are perfect for date nights.
Here are my top picks for romantic dining experiences in Key West!!
Latitudes on Sunset Key: My Top Recommendation!
Latitudes, located on the tiny Sunset Key, is the ultimate dining experience for couples visiting Key West.
To get here, you’ll need to take a short, 8-minute ferry ride from Key West. The ferry leaves from Opal Key Resort & Marina, which is located between the Key West Aquarium and the Little Truman White House.
Once you arrive, you’re treated to panoramic ocean views and world-class cuisine at Latitudes!! You can sit inside or outside here, but I recommend outside. Bonus points if you time your dinner with the sunset!!
Make sure to book a reservation in advance for Latitudes – I recommend at least 1-2 months out, especially if you are visiting in high season. To put it in perspective, Latitudes was OpenTable’s Most Booked Restaurant in the Florida Keys in 2024!
Blue Heaven: Brunch and Bloody’s
A Key West institution, Blue Heaven is as quirky as it is charming. Don’t let the chickens roaming around the outdoor dining area fool you—this place serves up some of the best food in town.
The laid-back atmosphere, live music, and whimsical decor make it perfect for couples looking for a fun, memorable dining experience.
We decided to visit here for their famous breakfast, which did not disappoint! We had boozy breakfast cocktails, insane lobster Benedict, heavenly banana pancakes, and a slide of Key Lime pie bigger than my head!
Overall, this spot should not be missed for couples visiting Key West. If you go for breakfast, make sure to get there early and be prepared to wait!
Hot Tin Roof: Amazing Food and Good Vibes
Located at the Ocean Key Resort we previously talked about, Hot Tin Roof is another fantastic choice for a romantic dinner in Key West.
The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating with gorgeous views of the water, especially at sunset!
The menu is a blend of Caribbean and Floridian flavors, with an emphasis on fresh seafood, like most places in Key West. We loved the intimate atmosphere here, especially on the patio, and the sunset views were just the cherry on top.
The inside was also very cozy and romantic, with beautiful dark wood paneling and a beautiful bar!
Not to mention the food, drink, and service were amazing. We ended up getting a bottle of wine and several courses to celebrate our anniversary here, and I already can’t wait to go back.
Blackfin Bistro: Cozy Garden Setting
For couples looking for a cozy, laid-back dinner spot, Blackfin Bistro on Duval Street is a fantastic choice.
We sat out back here in the charming garden bistro, which was super romantic, quiet, and intimate despite being steps away from the bustling Duval Street. The owner of the restaurant was our waiter, and he was so kind and warm!
In addition, the food was so fresh and delicious, with a focus on seasonal ingredients. Menu items like goat cheese croquettes, steamed mussels, and seafood pasta make the perfect blend of upscale and casual Keys dining.
Overall, my husband and I loved dining at Blackfin Bistro and will certainly return on our next trip to Key West!
Better Than Sex: for a Sexy Dessert!
Of course, no romantic getaway is complete without dessert, and Better Than Sex is the place to go for an unforgettable experience in Key West.
This dessert-only restaurant serves adults-only and indulgent treats paired with wines and themed cocktails. The entire menu is naughtily themed (there’s a reason it’s adults only!).
Inside, the dim lighting, private booths, and curated music all contribute to a very intimate atmosphere that makes it a perfect place for couples to end their night on a sweet note!

Key West is of course known for its lively bar scene, but there are plenty of spots that cater to a more intimate, couple-friendly atmosphere! Here are my top recommendations.
The Rum Bar
Located in the historic Speakeasy Inn, The Rum Bar is a cozy spot known for its extensive selection of rum. The bartenders here are knowledgeable and can whip up a cocktail based on your preferences.
It’s a quieter spot, perfect for couples who want to enjoy a good drink and conversation!
The Sunset Tiki Bar & Grill
If you’re looking for a laid-back, waterfront bar, the Sunset Tiki Bar is a fantastic option. Located at the end of Duval Street in front of the Ocean Key Resort, this is the perfect spot to grab a couple of drinks and enjoy the sunset from the water!
As you can see in the photo below, there are tons of colorful tables and chairs lining the waterfront, so you’re guaranteed a front-row seat! There’s a reason this place is named the Sunset Tiki Bar.
We come here every time we visit Key West for at least one drink.
The Garden of Eden
If you’re feeling adventurous, The Garden of Eden is a clothing-optional rooftop bar with a unique vibe. While it’s not for everyone, the views are amazing, and it’s definitely a memorable experience if you and your partner are up for something different. Only in Key West!
801 Bourbon Bar
Key West is known for its LGBTQ+ community, and seeing a drag show is a must when visiting! 801 Bourbon Bar offers a more casual, laid-back vibe compared to the other drag bar, Aqua.
However, the performances are just as entertaining, and it’s a great place to grab a drink and enjoy some laughs. They also have bingo, karaoke, and other events!
Final Thoughts
